ALL Raw, Plant Based, Gluten Free, No Refined Sugar, No Eggs, and No animals harmed in the making! (Yay!)

This is a classic way to enjoy the restorative benefits of adaptogens.

In the holistic health world, adaptogens have become quite trendy recently, but I find that many people aren’t really sure what exactly adaptogens are and why everyone is talking about them, so let me clear this up first!

What are adaptogens?

Adaptogens are a category of tonic herbs that are often used to keep the general terrain of the body functioning properly. They are plants that nourish our adrenals, while helping our bodies respond to a variety of stressors we experience in every day life, such as chemical exposure, emotional stress, sickness, and many others! While there are many types of tonic herbs, adaptogens are often classified as endocrine system tonics, although they can have an effect on other body systems as well.

What’s really magical about adaptogens is that they “adapt” to your body’s needs—if you’re tired and need a boost, they can provide that. If it’s late and you need sleep, they can help you unwind after a long day.

There are many herbal adaptogens that can be used in this recipe, but I just used what I had on hand, (aka the remaining dried herbs from my Adaptogenic Tincture) —-which was Ashwagandha, Astragalus, and Siberian Ginseng!

Benefits :

Siberian Ginseng :

Siberian Ginseng is an potent antioxidant adaptogen that helps improve resistance to stress, symptoms of the common cold, anxiety and depression, can improve athletic performance, and has libido boosting properties.

Astralagus Root :

Astralagus Root is an energy and immunity adaptogen. It focuses on increasing energy and boosting your immune response. Helps with inflammation and is anti-viral, thus decreasing symptoms of seasonal allergies.

Ashwagandha Root :

Ashwagandha Root is an ancient medicinal adaptogen. It has been used for over 3,000 years to relieve stress, increase energy levels, and improve concentration. Helps with sleep quality and decreases anxiety. Improves thyroid function, and supports the central nervous system.

Many nourishing adaptogens should be used in fairly high doses and many of them happen to be really tasty, so food-based preparations like this herbal snack, can be a great way to work them into your daily health plan! I will write more about my favourite adaptogens in the future, but for now I will leave you with my homemade recipe for these yummy (but healthy) “stress-free” truffles!

For delicious, high protein, antioxidant rich, and adrenal restoring cacao truffles, you will need :

  • 1/2 cup adaptogen powdered herb blend—this could include any combination of the following herbs: Astragalus Root (Astragalus Membranaceus), Siberian Ginseng (Eleutherococcus Senticosus), and Ashwagandha Root (Withania Somnifera).

  • 1 tsp Ginger (Zingiber Officinale) Rhizome Powder

  • 1 tsp Cardamom (Elettaria Cardamomum)

  • 1 cup Almond butter or any nut butter of your choice

  • 1/2 cup Maple syrup or Agave nectar

  • 1/3 cup Tahini (optional)

  • 1/2 tsp of Cinnamon

  • 4 Medjool Dates (pitted and blended) (optional)

  • 1/2 cup Chopped Almonds to roll in (optional)

  • 1/2 cup Raw Cacao Powder

  • 1 cup Shredded Coconut flakes to roll in (optional)

  • 1/8 cup Spirulina powder

  • 1/8 cup Hemp seeds

  • A splash of Vanilla Extract

Pro Tip : If you intend to add all ingredients, including optional ones, you may need to increase the amount of nut butter or maple syrup to keep the mixture moist. You can also save a small amount of your powdered adaptogen herb blend, raw cacao powder and hemp seeds to roll in later!

    Prep Time : 15 minutes

Servings : 7-8 medium sized truffles

    Instructions :

This can get messy, so it’s best to organize ingredients first!

At this point, your whole house should smell like the Willy Wonka Chocolate Factory. You’re welcome! 😉

You can serve immediately or put in the fridge (stored in covered container) depending on the consistency you desire. (I prefer putting them in the fridge for 1 hour so that they are thicker in texture)

When it comes to implementing a variety of healthy herbal preparations, these delicious truffles are a tasty way to do it!

Feel free to modify this recipe, with your favourite herbs/seasonings & make it your own!
