Why Herbal Tinctures?

The prominence of herbal tinctures is on the rise, but with so many avenues to integrate herbs in our lives, what is the benefit of this cultivation? Why take a tincture?

First of all, what is a tincture? To put it simply, tinctures are liquid herbal extracts. They provide a more effective herbal solution than capsules or powders. This is because this specific form best preserves the active elements in the plant, assures potency, and allows the beneficial properties to enter the bloodstream faster. It is typically made by steeping a herb in alcohol to extract the medicinal properties of the herb.

Tinctures go way back.

Traditional Chinese Medicine, shows us that tinctures were being used 5000 years ago. Ancient Egyptians used them one to two thousand years B.C. Hippocrates, Gulen, Hanneran, and many other 17th and 18th century physicians used tinctures and herbal remedies for all types of diseases and problems. In many countries today, herbal tinctures and herbal remedies are the principle method for treating many modalities. Thankfully western medicine is slowly catching on!

Tinctures are potent and long lasting.  About 3-4 drops equals one tablet/capsule and one 2 ounce bottle holds about 220-12 drop doses at the compassion of 220 drops of four tablets or capsules. The small amount of tincture needed, makes one 2 ounce bottle equal to about 6-8 -100 capsule bottles, and has higher potency and much faster absorption rate! Tinctures, if taken under the tongue are readily absorbed into the bloodstream and utilized by the body. Tinctures have a much longer shelf life than fresh or dried herbs.  I make sure I use all of my dried herbs within a year of drying them, some within 8 months, to guarantee they are fresh and potent.  Tinctures, on the other hand, when properly fixed, can last for 5 years or longer.  They are an excellent way of preserving the medicinal properties and health benefits of dried and fresh herbs. As a cost comparison, a full dosage of a tincture will cost 3-5 cents each, whereas capsules will cost 20-30 cents per dose. So if you’re a bargain hunter like me—tinctures are the way to go! The saving, the potency, and the speed of results clearly show why tinctures are so popular!

As always, make sure you are mindful of the herbs you are taking, and that they are safe for you to consume.  If you have any health concerns it is always wise that you work with a qualified medical practitioner. The proper dosage should be listed on the tincture bottle, but it’s equally valuable that you know the exact herbs you are ingesting, at the very least, trust who you are purchasing your herbal tinctures from.

For every human illness, somewhere in the world there exists a plant which is the cure. I believe that there is a healing potential locked inside plants which is integral with their evolution, just as it is part of human evolution to learn to tap this wonderful gift of Nature.
